Derivatives

Root: ইংরেজিতে original word কে Root বলে। অন্যভাবে বলা যেতে পারে, অর্থের দিক দিয়ে যে word কে ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র অংশে বিভক্ত করা যায় না তাকে Root বলে। যেমনঃ Book, Root, Eat, Space, Sweet ইত্যাদি।

Derivatives: Root এর সাথে Prefix বা Suffix যুক্ত হয়ে অথবা Root এর মধ্যবর্তী vowel পরিবর্তিত হয়ে যে নতুনword গঠিত হয় এবং নতুনভাবে গঠিত word টি যদি পূর্বের parts of speech থেকে আলাদা হয় তবে উক্ত পরিবর্তিত word কে derivative বলে।

Examples:

Sweet + ly (suffix) = Sweetly

Honest + dis (prefix) = Dishonest

Book + ish (suffix) = Bookish

Primary Derivative: যে সকল derivative একটি word এর ভিতরে কিছু পরিবর্তন ঘটিয়ে নতুন word গঠন করে তখন তাকে Primary derivative বলে।

Secondary Derivatives: Root এর সাথে Prefix বা Suffix যুক্ত হয়ে Root এর Parts of speech থেকে আলাদা যে নতুন word গঠিত হয় তাকে Secondary Derivative বলে।
